THE DRIED MILK BOOM.

(To the Editor. , . I Sir,—Under the above beading paragraphs have appeared in yours and other journals, and there is no question but what Mr. tioodfellow, managing director of tliP VVaikato Co-op. Dairy Association. j has been stirring up the ilry bones of I the dairying industry. Sow, I am not la supplier to the Waikato D.A., but am ii supplier to and shareholder of the N.Z. Dairy Association. At the same time I, with other farmers, mu«t welcome any movement that will lielp the industry forward, and enable us to meet present nnd future taxation. Whatever may be till , future of the dried milk industry— and 1 believe it. has a bright future — there ran he no question that. <;iven ships for export, the butter industry is on a pood wicket now. and will be for sonic years after the war. One has only to read the report in " Weddpl'a Review* , to confirm this. According to it. in 1014 Denmark exported to Kngland nO.OOO tons butter. Siberia 4(1.'00 tons, Australia jO.OOO tons, and NVw Zealand only lii.nnn tons. At the prevent time Siberia lis a back number, and -vv ill take yeare to recover and stock up with pows again. Denmark, in her «ree<l for high prices for beef, has reduced her stock, ami her exports have dropped one half, so the world, or at least the Continent of Kurope. will be depending on Australia and New Zealand for Gutter; and not only butter, but meat, etc. As to the ; dried milk industry, while 1 make no cfUMIIPnt on the rosy prices talked about, there is no question hut what there is a world-wide market for it. It is considered a perfect, food, and there will be a market for it where our butter never reaches, such as India, South Africa, etc | Skimmed dried milk is practically a byproduct, and we want to make the most of it if we can. What is really needed is this. Instead of the Minister of Agriculture talking platitudes, and jriving us solemn warnings to jro alow, and so on, let him -;et a move on. set the Dairy Commissioners to work and g-ive us ! dairy farmers a correct and comprehensive report on the whole question.—T am, etc-, J. W. McT,ARIX, Sen. Kninni Putamahoc, July S, 1918.
