THE COAL SUPPLIES.
SHORTAGE OF SEAMEN.
"The ehortage of coal supplies is not attributable solely to the miners," remarked a. gentleman in the trade tbie morning. "Some 2,000 tons of coal additional could be landed each month in Auckland but for the shortage of seamen." Further inquiry elicited the information that about eight coastal veseels that run coal from the north have been idle for several days owing to the shortage of seamen. The wages offered arc reported good, added to which overtime is allowed, and, of course, the men arc fed. One gentleman suggested that the Government might formulate come scheme by which aliens might be given the option of -working on these coal vessels, at the good par ruling, or be interned. The trouble is that when the veseels are not runing the miners suffer as well as the consumers at this end.
