COMMITTEE'S REPORT. As the campaign progresses the canvassers are cheered by the ready response made and by the goodwill manifested to the objecte of the appeal. There has been a great deal of silent appreciation of the "Army's" good work in the past, but to-u"ay men and women in all ranks of society are making public their feelings of admiration. There is no question that there is no limit to the scope presented by millions of men in khaki on active service pr on short furlough, nor can it be denied that the many wounded and sick are worthy of our utmost gratitude. The committee. trust there will be a very wide response' to this appeal, and that a very large proportion of our citizens will do their bit according to their ability. The treasurer (Mr. C. V. Houghton) and hie staff are now installed in the. committee rooms, No. 1, ground floor, New Zealand Insurance Buildings, and hopes; to be kept busy receiving the citizens' donations to this most worthy causeList of donations: —
NORTIICOTE AND BIRKEXHEAD. A public meeting, convened by the Mayor of Northcote (.Mr. J. Is. Tonar), to consider the best means to take to support the various patriotic funde, wae heli! in the Council Chambers, Northcote, last night.
It was unanimously resolved to make an immediate appeal to the residents of Birkcnhead and Northcote for a combined donation towards the Red ■Jersey Fund launched on Monday night at the Town Hall. .Mr. McPhail, as Mayor of Birkejihead, undertook to place the proposal before the Birkenhead Council tonight, and said he wa« certain of unanimous support from the Council and the Birkenhead Ladles' Patriotic League and residents. .Messrs. J. ft. Tonar. E. L. Flay, A. E. IT. Harrison, and B. Van Veen were appointed collectors for N'orthcote, and these gentlemen, together -with the Mayor of Rirkenbead, Mesdames .T. B. Tonar, A. Taylor, R. Marton, R. Bethwaite, and .Miss Tremain, were appointed a committee to carry out all arrangements in connection with the Red Jersey appeul in tlie Xorthcote district. The Hastings committee of the Red Jersey appeal has handed to Colonel Mclnness, representing Commissioner Hodder, a cheque for £3,404 13/6 as the proceeds of the amount collected in the Hastings district.
