TWO HORSES KILLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDLN. Saturday. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Winter Meeting opened to-day. A few showers fell in the morning, but the weather cleared before the racing started. The totalisator handled £22.!t77 10/. against £13,180 10/ hist year. Later results: — Birthday Handicap, one mile and a-quartex.—Korke's Drift, 9.0 (J. Ulsen), 1; 3, Thaddeos, 7-lu (C Emmerson), 2; i, Maxsa, 7.12 (G. Young), 3. Also started: 5, Ardenvhor; 4, Don Paciaco. Don Pacifico and Maxsa led at the start, Ardenvhor losing two or three lengths at the post. Rorke's Drift made a ran at the distance, and won easily by two and a-half lengths, with Marsa a neck away. Time, 'iS 2-5.
Orago Steeplechase, about three miles. — 6, Stone Ginger, 3X6 (H. Lorrlgan) and U, Palladio, 0.7 (W. Griffiths), dead heat, 1; 4. Sylva, 0.7 (J. Weir), 3. Also started: 2, Kirkby; 3, Recharge; 7, Paremata; X, Zarkoma; 5, Vascular; 8, Turehana; IU, Golden Grace. Vascular fell at the first obstacle, and Recharge fell at the seconu, Turehana and Paremata following tneir example at the post and rails. Golden Grape lost his rider at the brush fence, Zarkoma and Kirkby fell at the post ana tails, while Sylvia fell over Zarkoma. Palladio and Stone Ginger made a great race up the straight, the former making a dead heat in the last stride. Weir remounted Sylvia and secured third place. Only three finished. Time, <L27i. Kirkby was injureu seriously, and died after the race. Tne Judicial Committee considered the question of bumping In the straight, but decided that neither Jockey was to blame.
Tradesmen's Handicap, six furlongs.—2, Kilboyne, __ (A, H. Wilson), 1; 4, Benent, 7JO (_ Reedj, 2; 3, Kanwhero, 7.13 (tJEnimerson), 3. Also started; 1, Mohawk; 7. Boiler; 6, Glensponse; 5, Robert Belt Benefit led to tie distance, where Kilhoyne took the lead, winning by 'a length aud a-half, with the third horse a length, away. Due, U. 6 3-5. Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, two miles.—3, Golden Butterfly, 10.3 (A, McMillan), l; l, Chappalnioh, u_ (Mcintosh), 2; 4, LulgL 1025 (Griffiths). 3- Also startea: 2, Well wood; 5, Captain French; 6, The Stunner. Wellwood fell at the secono obstacle and broke his neck. Chanpalmon led over tbe doable In front of the stana, where Stunner ran off. Golden Butterny flcsed on Cnappalmoh four furlongs from home, and won by a length and a-half, with Lnigi siz lengths away. Time, 4.49 2-5. Momoca Handicap, seven furlongs.—ti, Uaden, 9_5 (A. H. Wilson), 1; 1, Muzzle, 9.7 (Enuaexson), 2; 5, Elimeedy, 9.13 (Dawson), 3. Also started: 9, Achilles; 2, Glenshine; _, Zephland; 12, Leaping Bum; a. Take Down; 4, Bonaign; T, Belgian King; 14, Moneymaker; 3, Royal Star; 13, Black Moontain; ID, All Pink. Zephland led to the straight, where Linden came through and won by two lengths, KRmeedy beating ■Muzzle by half a length. Time, 1-30 4-6. Winter Welter Handicap, one mile.—6, fencon, 5.4 (A. Buth-ren). 1; 6, B—brogan. a.o (Dawson), 2: Hot Air. BJO (A. Wilson). Icn/ started: 3, Aycliffe; 4, Kazan: 7. wna PUgrlm; 8, Karainohe; 2, Borodino. Helicon headed the field at tbe flve-rur-i°.?f[s Post and won by four lengths from aubrogan, who beat Hot Air by half a length. Time, L 42 4-5.
