ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

WAGER. Te Anamatu. —Tour informant must hare measured it on one of tils I hleak days in September. The Ellersile racecourse is a mile and a furlong lv circumference; (2) a distance is - J4oyas. S.H., Newton.—He raced in the name ot Mr D. Kavanagh, and was ridden by C. Cress. Marquetenr was withdrawn from tne Jervois Handicap at 9 o'clock this morning. .1. Cbisholm got back from Wanganm last night with Golden Glow and Gluclan. Te Manuiri. which is engaged in the Maiden Steeplechase at Elierslie, has arrived at headquarters. Mr W. Ring has arrived at Ellersile with Taina tt> Kapu which Is engaged at the A.U.C. Winter Meeting. Kauri King, Ibex ami Fionnuala were hrought from Wanganm by train, arriving at headquarters last evening. Yesterday afternoon Peneton was schooled over the hurdles on the course proper at Elierslie, giving a fair display. nonnie Jean, Ambassador and Glf-nhow were brought from the Waikato yesterday to fulfil their engagements at the A.X.C. Winter Meeting. F. D. Jones arrived last night with Bore and Charley, and the pair were on the track at Kllerslie this morniug, being, restricted to steady pacing. L. H. Hewitt has been engaged to ride several of the Messrs. Alison's horses at the A.R.C. Winter Meeting and is due to arrive in Auckland to-morrow. The southern owner. Mr J. Bull, arrived lii Auckland this morn-ng, and was at Ellerslle after breakfast to see his horses, Colorado and All Over, work. W. Raynor, with Mart on. and J. Morrlss, with Colorado and All Over, reached Elierslie by train last eight. The trio were oa the track this morning doing easy work. The odds will not be very long against Mr Eastou winning the CJ.C. double wltu Gang Avva and Master srrowan. provided both horses go ou all right iv the meantime. Walotnre, whicb ran second in ttio Kata Hack Hurdles at Wanganui on Saturday, filled a similar position in the same rare last year, when she rinisbed second to Kohinahina. Tho hunters Ambassador and Glonbow were schooled over the four hurdles in the centre of lue course at Elierslie this moming. The pair went no pace, and -as a consequence, jumped very slowly. * The apologists for the scratchin~ ol Biplane for the Awapunl Gold Cup will not be at all pleased with the Manawatu Racing Club making public a communication they recently received oa the matter. The Barawa will not arrive from New Plymouth until to-morrow morning, hut as it only means a night on the boat, the horses she is bringing will not have their preparations seriously interfered with. Glucian, which won the Balgownie HacK Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday, has not won a race since he was successful in the Raukawa Hack Handicap at tne Hawke's Bay Winter Meeting last June. Billy Wiggs has gone sore, and will not be a competitor at the A.R.C. Winter Meeting. The son of All Black is to be turned ont for a spell, after which he will probably be given an opportunity to earn distinction as a jumper. If the weather remains fine, the steeplechase course aud the hurdles on the course proper at Elierslie will ue available tomorrow morning, which will be the last opportunity trainers will have to school their charges before the meeting.

Coalition was given liis first lesson over the Ellerslio country yesterday morning, and created a favourable impression, ile only joined in after Hopye, Waimai, ilautere and Ranza Mist had gone nearly a ronnd, but finished on strongly. anil "the distance fchould not trouble him.

Monster was not produced on the opening day of the Wanganui meeting, but the son of Spalpeen was saddled up in the Ram Hack Hurdles on the second day. lie was whispered about as having a real goon chance, but after being well up in the early stages failed to hold his position, and was outside a place at the finish.

The race Kauri King had on the opening day o£ the Wanganui meeting worked a big improvement in the son of Soult, ana he fenced much better in the May Hurdles on Saturday. It could not be termed a high-class performance to run second to Purseuller iv receipt of 211b, but his showing must have pleased his connections.

Despite the unsatisfactory nature of. some of his efforts over the big fences, R Lou--ley In still hopeful of Art's prospects as v steeplechaser, and the Sarto gelding will be tried again this week. He is booked for a trip to Hawke's Bay In company with Banian, but the nattm- of the programme, will probably depend on how Art shapes in his schooling over the steeplechase fences.

The Wang.inui Jockey CJu!> had a record winter meetinc. the machine investments totalling an increase of £1T.I3!J(! on last year. Under the circumstances the increase "was somewhat romarkable. for the rain considerably interfered with speculation, ana a lot of money was shut ont. The elu» intend making extensive alterations to their totalisator house before the next meeting rolls round, and from r,-bat can be gathered every convenience will bo made for the public to invest their money, and also receiver their dividends.

AN ALTERATION" WANTED. The congestion on too telegraph wires which caused so many owners to mis< their acceptances for the A.X.C. Winter Merring on Friday draws attention to a rule whicn badly retires altering. At present tne rule states that no entry, accept.-_uce, or forfeit shall be received after the advertised hcair, except when an alteration of such time or place has been duly authorised by resolution of the committee publicly announced prior to the originally advertised hour. In the present instance some owners were in a bit of a quandary as to making the trip north until they saw how their horses shaped at Wanganu'i. ami acceptances as late as possible. In the case of PurseSller, I was in tue Wanganui telegraph office when Mr Lysnar came in -n-ith his wire, and he informed mc then that he was accepting with the mare, and put in tne telegram in my presence about half-past twelve. This did not reach the A.U Uoffice until next morning, and the acceptance had to be refused. Quite recently a telegraph boy pat a wire containin" a nomination under the door of an office near a racing club, although it was plainly addressed to the club, ami the wire was cot received until the next diiy with tne result that, through no fault of the owner, the nomination had to be refused Whether it is a good policy for a club to have its acceptance day during the period another race meeting is in progress is a matter for the clubs themselves to consider, but the question of a delayed telegram is- one that affects the racin" community generally. Why the official time or j a te'.egram with the telegraph l ofllce shonld be accepted is hard to understand. It may be argued that such a' course would be open to abuse, but one, really fails to see how that could cornel about, for the altering of the time of tne putting In of a wire Iβ a rather serious matter, and it would be Just as reasonable to imputt? suchi motives to o. socr&tjiry <*r I a club, who would -certainly derive the greater benefit. At present the rule is a J relic of the dark afa'es, and a revision is I badly warned. '

TURF NOTES FROii TH£ SOUTH.

CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Special to " Star."i CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The work at lUcearton this morning wa4 o£ a very interesting character. The trial grass track was open for horses engaged :it "Dunedin Jockey Clnb Meeting, bur nil those intended for that trip had left, and. there was no call for the track. A largo number of horses put in an appearance, but their tasks for the most part were oC an easy character.

The abseneo of most of the hurdle horseprogranimes of local trainers, and there is not likely to be much schooling work this week.

Jeannot has been enjoying a spell since he raced at Ouinaru, but will probably resume work next week, in view of jumiir ing engagements later on.

Since her return from Oamaru, Trcmena. has been having a run in the paddock. It is unlikely that she will do any more raoins till spring, and she may be on the easy, list for some time.

l< , . f>. Jones, after racing Bore and Charley at Wanganui last week, left yesrerdar f<.r Kllerslie. to assist at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. During the absence of F. D. Jones in the North. MajestikofT. Silver and Black, Euripos, Bondage, and, other members of his team are haying au easy time.

Ricoarton stables will not be strongly represented at the Dunedin ttippHti;* Kirkby. Vascular, and Wellwood make a Rood team for the Steeples, along with. Paremata and Golden Butterfly, which are trained In the country, while Xanpata will he a worthy candidate for hurdle events. Fleetbam and Kanilnohe comprisn the eonlingent of flat racers for the trip. Tha Kiccarton horses left this morning.

The acceptances for the first day of the Tmnedin Club's Winter Meting arc a trifle? disappointing, especially for the chief evecn on the flat. The two Steeples hare filled well, however, and there is also a prospect of good fields in some of the minor racea on the flat.

.Sir George Clifford is a consistent patron of the Drmedin Jockey Club's meeting, and the defection of Adjutant, Brambletye. ami Gamecock from their engagement at the approaching fixture caused- some surprise. Ir was intended to send them South, but thf-ir acceptances did not arrive in tlmeRγ. J. Mason has almost completed ais arrangements for another spring campaign, in Australia, aid he will probably leave for Sydney next month. Biplane will be toe star member of the team, which may also include Gloaming and the yearling VT Solferino—Anita. . _ Before his departure Kirkby was given another turn over the steeple fences; aC Rlccarton on Saturday, and was respon "TrWna Baniaa weil.
