WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE
*- * The annual' meeting of the Auckland branch of the Women's National Heserr* ! took place last evening in the Re«J7« rooms, Rutland Street. The president (Mia* E. Melville) was in the chair. The report ! submitted showed that little opportunity I had been given hy the Government for i the Reserve to carry out its primary object ' the training of wouieu to replace men sent tto the front, but, recognising that the call would- yet come, the Reserve has been held together and kept active by undertaking various branches of patriotic wort during the year. At the commencement of last year the Reserve canvassed tht business firms of the elty to find out what need existed for the services of the members. Although some firms reported that women were not required in the city, other* ' considered that they wonld yet have » j take the place of men, and In the grocery line the demand was prominent. Th* Reserve ' offered to assist the National Efficiency 'Board, but was told to mark time. During the year branches had been formed at Whangarei and Paeroa, and other places are ready to fall Into Um«' soon as a deflnite plan of action is allowed. The Sewing Committee offered to sew f<* any necessitous cases In the back-blocks, and the Education Board has undertaken t» | supply information of such cases. Oner* :of garments for the victims of the recent ; fixes were also made. The Sewing Guild '■works under the direction of Nurse Scott, | and has a balance of £8 18/S with which to commence the year's work. The nurslnf division has done good Work during the t year. Dr. Sllngsby Reekie Is acting a* i lecturer. In place of Dr. Kenneth MacItKenzle. who. is on active service. Tb* signalling section has had to disband" on j account of its Instructors proceeding to ft* , front. The care of soldier graves has been 1 well attcuded to under the control i.f.MlsJ j'Stathh-m.
