ORGAN RECITAL.
. t The principal work played by Mr Barnetn at the Town Hall organ recital last Saturday evening was the recently-written organ sonata bjr the famous Irish musician Vllllers .Stanford. The author has something to say, his music is well adapted to the Instrument and makes use chiefly- ofi foundation tone, and is a line example of. organ music oX the best style. The opening movement is designed in a grand and noble style, .breadth, dignity, and pleasant harmonic and rhythmic feeling being its chief characteristics. Aa rolled out ou the. diapasons and flutes .by the recitallst, the music created a good impression. Tho •delightfully conceived "Minuet" was delicately and gracefully treated, and. some admirable contrasts of tone colour were secured in the performance given of the Interesting and grandiose "Finale." Gullmnnl's Chorus in 1) Major, after the style of Handel, was executed In a majestic: and resolute manner, and displayed to advantage the full power of the splendid organ. Variety of colour and the necessary relief in tone between accompaniment and solo were commendable features in the readings given of •Guilmant's "Pastorale" and Johnston's "Evensong," whilst other pleasingly rendered solos were I'aderewski's "Minuet," an English folk son.tr and Wely's "Storm" .Fantasia. Klgnr'n "Pipes of Pan" and Willeby's "Crossing the "Bar"' were effectively sung by Mr Sydney liutler.
