SWIMMING. AKARANA CLUB'S GALA. The eixtb of the series of galas instituted tor the Akarana Swimming Club attracted a largo attendance of spectators to the Tepid 'Hath last night, when an enjoyable programme was put through. The events were restricted to 30 yards for novices, school girls, boys, ladles, and men, 100 yards mixed styles for ladles, and liiiO yards for men. A very promising lad, A. Birch, won the novice handicap oil the 6s murk, end later ewam third Iα the boys' handicap, which was won rronv scratch by N. Avery, who has a steady and powerful stroke. 'Miss Violet WaJrond again proved herself iv the schoolgirls' race, winning with very little t6 spare from Miss Olive Edenborongh, the scratch swimmer, who bad to concede the winner balf-a-sccond start In the ladies' race considerable interest was taken in the performance of Miss I. Hoeft, whoso Parnell performance had attracted attention. She won her heat by a touch from 'Miss 11. Leary, who was conceded 2Js, putting up the good time of KG 4-os from scratch; tout In the final, which was swum in just a fraction faster, she was unable to get a place. Miss V. Walrond, the schoolgirl champion, getting the win from the Is murk. Ivan Stewart won the men's DO yards from the 4s mark iv the smart time of 20 3-sb. The race of the evening was tne 220 yards handicap. In ■whleTi H. Jacobi, W. F. Smith, G. R. Champion, and C. Stuart contested the final r>o yards very strenuoiiely, and J&cobi secured n narrow win from Smith, with Champion almost a dead heat for third. Another attractiro i>vcnt won the ladles' polo match, In which the Akarana Club eventually beat Devonport by four goals to one. Interesting novelties of the evening were furnished by a display of fancy swimming bj- half-a-dozen ladies of the Life Saving Society, under tho direction of Prof. O. JJ. Anderson and by an exhibition of acrobatic diving ■by Con. Welson, the champion swimmer. The results of the events are:—

The last picnic of the Season of the New Zealand Power Boat Association will be held at the Rangitoto Reserve next Saturday afternoon, the executive very wisely making an alternative Of Buckland's Beach if the weather should be unsuitable for the former place.

The launches will assemble off the club pavilion at 2.15 p.m., and proceed together to the destination at 2.80 p.m. On arrival the children will be provided for in the way of toys for races, as well as sweets. Events which trill create plenty of amusement to onlookers will be arranged for the older members of the Association, lor which suitable prizes will be presented. Hot water will be available on (he grounds, and n most enjoyable outing is anticipated. Messrs. O. H. Nelson and H. Bach have been elected as members of the executive.
