GREAT ARTILLERY BATTLE ON FRENCH FRONT
LIVELY EXCHANGES IN THE CHAMPAGNE. (Received 5.45 a.m.) LONDON, February 22. A great artillery battle has begun on the entire French front.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) A French communique reports:—Fairly lively reciprocal artillery fighting is in progress along the entire front, especially in the regions of Pinon, Vauxaillon and Malmaison, in the valley of the Aillette, twelve miles northeast of Soissons, and at the Butte de Mesnil, in the Champagne. Thiree German aeroplanes were brought down and two were forced to descend in their own lines, seriously damaged. General Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We repulsed raiders southward of Armentieres. Patrols elsewhere brought in a number of prisoners. The enemy artillery is active in the neighbourhood of St. Quentin, the ArrasCambrai Road, Lens, Armentieres, and Ypres. A break in the weather prevented flying except for artillery observation.— (A. and N.Z. and Reuter.)
