BIRKENHEAD-NORTHCOTE RESERVE.

At Hie Birkenhead Council meeting last night the Mayor (Mr. .T. P. MγPliail) stated that "tlio Little Shoal Bay Reserve Committee had mot on Saturday Inst, and after inspecting the additional damage caused by tlie high tides had decided that the raising of the wall was necessary to prevent a. possible recurrence lof the experience last week, when the ■ seawall was covered for a depth of about eighteen inches. Mr. F. E, Powell, 0.X., was present. and submitted estimates for repairing the damaged bank, facing all stonework wilh concrete, the construction of a timber breastwork at the Kortheote side, creeling a dwarf concrete wall, and raising the Birkenhead end. dismantling the present fence, and filling to • a greater height behind the timber embankment. That, for an increase of three feet in height for the entire length, at £455, was recommended in a letter road from the Northcote Council, which is a joint partI ncr in the reserve.

A motion to adopt the increased height of l>ift was lost on the easting vote of the Mayor, the voting being: For—Crs. Campbell, Stewart. Skeates and Webb. Against — The .Mayor, Crs. Hadfield. Mason, and Walton,' the latter of whom, huwevcr, desired to refrain from voting, on the ground that, he was not sufficiently familiar with the work suggested, but the Mayor insisted that his vote should be recorded, a division having been called.

Cr. Walton then moved that the wall be repaired, and the question of raising it remain in nhevanee.

Cr. Iladfield seconded an amendment by Cr. Campbell to adopt nn additional height of 2ft :>in. at an estimated cost of -C42C. which was eventually carried by •> to IS, the voting being: For—Ore. Campbell, Skeatoß, Stewart, Webb and Mason. Against—The Mayor, Oβ. Iladfiold and Walton.
