Jlr. Eliot Davis left for the South last evening by the express.

Dr. Buist, of New Plymouth, is staying at the Central Hotel. The Hon. Arthur Myers, who has been spending a few days in Rotonia, left for Wellington direct this morning. Mr. D. M. Gillies, local superintendent engineer for the Union S.S. Co., has gone to Australia. Mr. R. H. Reany, Public Works District Engineer, has been transferred to Kelson and Jlarlborough. Dr. Sydney Allen, of Dunedin, has received a captain's commission in the N.Z.M.C., and leaves for England shortly. Mr. M. Sadler, of Sydney, is staying nt the Grand Hotel, also Mr. H. Triggs, of Christchurch,, and Mr. G. Lander, of Melbourne. Mr. D. O'Leary, inspector of permanent way, Westport and Nelson, has retired after 40 years' service with the Department. Lieut. A. F. Watchlin, R.N.R., formerly master of the tug Terawhiti, is returning to New Zealand on four months' leave after three years' acti,vc service with the British Navy.

Miss Russell (from Bombay), who was here last year representing the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission, is at present visiting Auckland, and is the guest of Mr?. 8. L. P. Rimmer.

Messrs. Henry Brett and Heii._ ,lorton left by the express last evening to attend the annual meeting of the Press Association at Wellington.

Mr. Jamc3 Mackay, an old Wellington resident, has died in Scotland. He wae for many years in business in Brandon Street, but after his retirement paid several visits to Scotland. Ho was a well-known member of the Thorndon Bowling Club.

Mr. William Chamberlain, a wellknown resident of the EUesmere district, Canterbury, who died on Thursday last, was born in Devonshire in 1549." He came to New Zealand in the ship Loch Fleet in 1877. Mr. Chamberlain took a great interest in the export of frozen mutton, and as far back as ISB3 exported a line of sheep on his own account.
