ATHLETICS.
The laet attempt of C. W. Gitsham, the great distance runner, who ran second in the Stockholm Marathon, to lower- the South African five miles flat record was unsuccessful (says an exchange). Prior to the race" the champion had strained the muscles of his back, and this told on him severely after the four miles had been negotiated. He ultimately finished 23see. behind the record, his time being 27tnin. 21 3-5 ccc.
