A SHATTERING FRENCH RAID IN CHAMPAGNE
EFFECTIVE ASSISTANCE BY AMERICAN BATTERIES.
LONDON, February 15. A French communique states:—We made an extensive raid south-west of Mesnil Hillt in the Champagne, on a front of 1200 yards, and penetrated the enemy positions as far as the third line. We shattered the defences and destroyed a number of dug-outs. American batteries most effectively aiduil the raid. We organised the captured positions.—(A. and N.Z. and Reuter.)
A German communique states that the British and French continue reconnaissances at many points, resulting in violent engagements northwards of Lens and Champagne. The French obtained foothold in a salient southward of Tahure.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) (Received 8 a.m.) WASHINGTON, February 15. The United Press correspondent at the French front states that the American barrage in the Champagne cut off the Germans' retreat, prevented them from bringing up reinforcements, and protected the advancing French (A. and X.Z. Cable.)
