POSITIONS IN THE EAST.
In a recent conversation with Dr. Morrison, of China, reference was made to the chances before a woman who wished to earn her living in the Far East. The distinguished traveller said there were positions to he obtained, but qualifications were demanded. For a secretary the pay would be about £250 a year, but the applicant must know French well, and would have to hold a speed of 140 in shorthand, with about 00 on the typewriter. An increasing nurrober of well-educated ladiee are finding- positions iv Hong Kong and in Tientsin as ehorthand-typiets, but a good speed was essential for high-class work, and French was also very valuable, although a good number did not know that language. A knowledge of languages was extremely useful. With this the pay would run up to £300 a year, but ngainet this must be placed the fluctuation of the dollar. At present ten dollars held the value of six. In case of an agreement it would ibe for two years with fare paid second-class till the East was reached, where it became first-class always, because of the prestige of the European.
