■ 1 APPEALS BETOKE FIRST 1 * 7 BOAHD^ DETAILS OF CASES, The list o_ appeals adjudicated upon by the _____ Auckland Military Service Board to-day comprised largely ad- . journed cases and the re-hearing of 1 appeals of men rejected and now classed 1 as CI. 1 The "Union Company, on behalf of 6 which the manager, Mr. Irvine, appeared, * sought the retention of Edward J. S. * Gibson, Wm. T. Brand, and John E. d Walker (second officers), and James VV. Sproule (ship's cook), on the ground ot c public, interest and occupation. The * appeals were adjourned 6ine die, while c the reservists engaged in their present * occupation. t George Hirst, of Hunua, appealed for Wm. Hirst, the only man on the farm. No other labour could be obtained in , the district. He had a son on active j. service and another, a timber-worker, not in the district. Thp appeal was f adjourned sine die. - - Robert Fifleld (CI), farmer and £ Helensviile, said he was farming 150 acres, and wanted leave to complete necessary work. He did .not. knowhow the place would be fun in his absence, as he was the only man on the j ■farm. The Board gave leave till June 6.- - £ John P. MacCready, watchmaker, Mt. 6 Eden, asked leave to make application for financial assistance on behalf of his j widowed mother, whom he supported. He had a brother on active service, or.. r returned and discharged, and a joung T one attending school. The case was j. adjoun.ed accordingly. j MANAGING FARMS. * The appeal -of Bernard Pegnero, farmer, Mercer (Mr. Denniston), whose J case had been adjourned sine die, was reviewed, counsel having advised the * Board that the brother had returned f from active service. The circumstances r of appellant were unchanged otherwise. | The returned brother gave evidence that .' as the result of a knee operation per- j formed in England he was unable to do ! farm work. Witness said he had a * brother on transport service. "■ The Board adjourned the appeal till c June to ascertain the condition ol appellant's brother then. r James Kcaney (01), of Ararimu (Mr. c A. Moody), the sole support of his in- f valid widowed mother, and the only T man on the farm of 100 acres, had his case adjourned sine die. He had a brother killed at the war, one still at the front, and another over military age. A MOTHEFS PLEA. Arthur R. Williams (CI), of Ponsonby, was appealed for by his mother, who said this son was her only support, with the exception of a small allowance from a son on service. Appellant, a widow, said she had eight children, of whom the r subject of the appeal and two daughters A were at home. The whereabouts of one * son (married) were unknown; one son * (married) was at present in camp, and t another at the front. The daughters, at < home earned their keep, and two were - married. The Board said it considered i that financial help would meet the diffi- i culty. Williams was only -going to the < CI camp, and might never. g_______,the--j front. If ho was affected in the way j the mother mentioned it should be dis- . covered at the CI camp. ] Appellant: I am speaking the truth, your Worship. I ought to know. Could you give mc a guarantee that he will not be sent overseas? The Chairman: No, iwe could not do that. If you get some financial help he could go, and he might not be kept in camp for long. The mother: Don't you think you can leave him. He is the only one I have. My father fought for this country. All my sons have been soldiers; one fought in South Africa, one went to Samoa, and one is at the front. Could you not spare mc the last one I have with mc? ] The Board announced that the case f would be adjourned pending an appli- - cation for financial assistance by the j appellant. ( REQUESTS FOR LEA . £. Isaac Uolden (Cl >, orchardist, Hender- ' son. who had a brother on active ser- ' vice, asked for time to complete the ' season's orchard work. He had taken over the orchard to release his brother : for service. Appellant, who wore eye- - glares, said he had previously been rejected owing to his defection in sight. The Board gave leave till July 23, with the right to re-hearing. For Eric Pitcher (CI), clerk, Parnell. E. -Allinghnm and Co. applied for leave until April 11 to make business arrangements to replace tho reservist. Thos. F. Hill, director and secretary of tho - firm, tendered evidence. The Board * granted the request. O.N" SHIPPING REPAIRS. r A. J. Parker and Co. asked permis- J, sion to retain the services of H. O. J Christmas, head turner and fitter, en- £ gaged chiefly on overseas and local sea- r i going vessels. Christmas was the best £ man they had on shipping repairs. Tho firm did work for the Iluddart-Parker I vessels and New Zealand Shipping Co. IJ Labour was terribly scarce, and 60 Is acute that the firm had to refuse orders. 1 Appellant admitted that there were not - so many overseas boats coming to New c -Zealand-now, but said there -was plenty c of work all the same with wh/fc did come and with the regular vessels. ' The Board held that Christmas was c essential to an essential industry. The- ' appeal was adjourned sine die. x Shirley H. Fussell (CI), painter, Eden- . dale, the sole support of his mother, pleaded undue hardship, and the appeal was adjourned for an application for , financial assistance. Appellant said he had a married brother killed in action jand another married brother in camp. j The father of Robert B. McLarin a (CI), Putamahoc, sought exemption for c his son, who, with a younger brother, h was helping to run three farms of re- 1 speetively 333 acres, 420 acres, and 440 acres. He had three volunteer sons at t the front. Oh the three' farms" general o dairying was carried on. On two farms i GO cows were milked on each place, on a the share system. On the home farm '_ they mostly did grain-growing. • His a sons also assisted neighbours thrashing, a etc., owing to the number of men who v had left the district. » The appeal was adjourned sine die J' until a brother returned from the front.
