HRST AUCKLAND BOARD.

DETAILS QV PROCEEDINGS,

Appeals and applicatiotis ot reeerview) 1 came before the First Auckland Military Service Board to-day. John Brady, of Patumahoe (Mr. Moody), who "Wanted to complete- specified wort on his father's farm and for a domestic reason, was given further extension of leave till April. . Win. Gemmell (Mr. Moslem), managing foreman for Messrs. C. and W. Hayward, of Dunedin, which firm had several building contracts in Auckland, appealed for further extension of kis leave in order to complete! the work delayed by the dislocation of coastal shipping preventing the arrival of necessary goods and materials. The Board- recommended leave till March 7. In the appeal of Vivian B. Stonej-, farmer, of Silverdale, the Board received an official report which conflrmed the statements of appellant, who was the only man on his father's istrcfl; the case was adjourned sine , die. the appeal of Percy Dellcrw, Mount Ederi, clerk in the employ of Ambury's: Ltd., whose ceee had been adjourned J for financial considerations, was die- ! allowed, leave being granted until j April 4. ' A FARMER'S AFFAIRS. The adjourned appeal oi John P. Hani (Mr. E. T. Field), whose wife had previously appeared before the Board, was taken." He said he was milking , 50 cows and running 190 dry stock on his 96 - 2 acre farm at HelensvilTe. He had volun teered with the Main Body, but had t< return to the farm, which wa3 not effi cientlv managed while he was in cam] for three niotrthe. If he had to serve h< would have to close the farm, as li< feared the cattle would ho stolen. Replying to questions, Hand said i share-milker attended Ma herd, am

ippeuam; aia mc cropiuug α-im work: The ahare-milkcr' could not manjge the place. When his wife appealed he was away looking for" missing: cattle. He would have appealed in any ease, but expected- that he would be able to get someone to manage his property up' to j the last mdmerit. Appellant (40) added incidentally that he had given several sections of land for patriotic purposes. He did riot have his discharge from the Forces. It was not true that he had bought himself out of the Forces, as the chairman said had been reported to the Board. *The Board adjourned the case sine die. A DECISION REVERSED. The appeal of George A. Campbell, of Alfriston (Mr. Vallance), who originally got a month's leave till November last, came forward in the' shape of a hearing , , the grounds- being that appellant's stepfather (Chas. Middleton), who was to run the place on' a reduced herd, had met with an accident, and could riot do any heavy work. Besides, having a dry> stock farm of his dwn »t Papakura appellant, said he was managing his stepfather's property, on which he was the only -worker. The farm would not pay its "way with a herd less than 21 milking cows, to which the herd had been reduced. If left on the place he intended to increase the herd to its original number. Appeijant" had relatives in the district, -but they could not run his stepfather's place. Labour could not be obtained. • Charles Middleton gave evidence, and the , appeal ■mis adjourned sine die.

A MECHANICAL MATTER.

The adjourned appeal of H. S. J. Wilson, of Eden Terrace, specialist mechanic (Mr. Hall Skeltori), was called on. Evidence was given by a number of representatives of boot, saddlery and other trade firms who had machines that required attention. It was stated that appellant was an indispensable expert, and repaired all sorts of machinery besides manufacturing parts. He was also an expert on sewing machines. Major Conlan produced a report from ttfe Labour Department, for which the appeal had been originally adjourned. This stated that two large firms in the sewing machine trade were now prepared to repair, during the war, the machines made by other manufacturers.' It was added that all the work to be done in connection with . trade, machinery and machines could be, handled locally or could be done elsewhere, but Wilson was not essential io any trade or industry, and no reason could Be seen why he should be exempted.

Major Conlan said that with regard to a petition previously put in fn favour of exemption of Wilson, he understood that some of the signatories would not have signed the petition had they known that local firms, which previously had not repaired the manufactures of opposition firms, would now do so. For that and other reasons he would like to call evidence later.

The appeal was adjourned till February for the attendance of the Labour Department's official.
