FIRES IN THE CITY.
GOOD WORK OF BRIGADE. An old and unoccupied wooden biu-d-," ing in Lome Street, the property of Mrs. W.- Rainger, was gutted- by fire shortly after 11 o'clock on Saturday evening. • From a call, the City Fire Brigade" arrived on the scene to find the building' in flames.
There, was yet good work to be done, however, for to quell the outbreak' meant practically saving a terrace of five two-storey, four-roomed wooden cottages, of which the burning building was the centre one, situated in a gully.
The prospect was a difficult one as the buildings are situated close together.
Realising in earnest the seriousness of the position, the brigade got to work with all the appliances available, and made good, saving the remaining cottages," free of damage.
The gutted building was not insured.
Early the same evening, about six '
o'clock, the brigade turned out to a minor outbreak, the fusing of an. electric wire at the offices of the Remington Roneo Company in Queen Street. The outbreak was extinguished before any damage was done.
