Mr. P. C. Elliot, of Gisborne, is staying at the Royal Hotel. / His Honor -Mr. Justice Stringer and his wife are visiting Rotorua. The appointment of Mr. D. G. Matheson, Ivi.rC, Ch.B., as assistant medical officer at Rarotonga, is gazetted. The Rev. Harry Johnson iB to be inducted to the charge of the Congregational Church at Mount Eden on the evening of January 17. Mr. Robt. Gooding has been appointed an inspector under the Public Health Act and an officer under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, is expected to return from Rotorua on Monday. Dr. C. J. Reakes, director of the stock division of the Department of Agriculture is at present in Auckland on Departmental business. Mr. Rudd, of the Union Steamship Company, Auckland, leaves for Fiji, where he will take over the Company's office for a few months. Hon. A. M. Myers (Minister of Munitions) arrived in Auckland this morning. He leaves again for Wellington on Monday evening. Dr. G. E. Morrison, who has for many years held the most important "position of official adviser to the Government of China, is to arrive in New Zealand at Bluff on January 17, leaving this country at Auckland on February 11. The Minister of Marine (Mr. T. M. Wilford), accompanied by Mr. L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, will pay a visit to the Waitaki river '(Oamaru) next month for the purpose of learning how the quinnat salmon are running. Mr. James S. Bond, of Hamilton, and Mr. John Patterson, of Pukekohe, have 'been nominated to fill the vacancy in the west ward of the Education Board, caused by the death of Mr. James Auld. The election takes place on February 1. Votes forwarded by post must reach the office of the Board on or before that date. Mr. E. F. Hollands, who has been appointed electrical engineer to the Stratford Borough Council, vice Mr. Newton, resigned, is at present in the Public Works service, being relieving engineer at the power-house in the Lake Coleridge scheme. He was traiend as an electrical engineer in England, and had a good deal of experience in general engineering in the workshops. Mr. Michael Moore, who died at Battery Road, Napier, removes another member of the famous " Dolly Varden" crew of 1876. He was for some time a member of the Napier Harbour Board, and also kept the Napier Hotel for a considerable period. He was a crack oarsman, being connected with the Wellington Rowing Club when its crews carried off almost every rowing event. Mr. George Fraser, of the well known firm of George Fraser and Sons, ironfounders and engineers, Auckland, has gone to New Plymouth to take up the position of" managing director of the iron works at Moturoa in succession to Mr. F. D. Payne, who recently resigned. Some of the new plant ordered after the last trial has come to hand, and is being installed, but it will be some little time before smelting is resumed. Mr. Henry J. Tapperell, whose resignation of the position of news editor of the Sydney " Daily Telegraph," was announced recently began his journalistic career in Masterton, whence he went to Wellington thirty-four years ago, joining the " New Zealand Times " staff.- He afterwards crossed to Sydney, having received an appointment on the " Daily Telegraph." He subsequently returned to Wellington to take up the editorship of the " Times," a position he held for about a year. Finally returning to Sydney, he rejoined the staff of the "Daily Telegraph," and has held the position of news editor for two or three years.
