CITY FISH MARKET.
In conversation, the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Gnnson) remarked this morning that the committee in charge of the city fish markets had an anxious time lately, as both trawlers -were undergoing the annual overhaul, which necessarily meant a. reduction in the amount of fish for public consumption. The trawlers are now again at work, and recent returns ehowed considerable improvement in the quantity of fish available for public consumption. As was announced at the meeting of the City Council some time ago, the account in respect to the fish market was in arrears, but that was only to be expected when a business was in <;ouree of being initiated. There had •been heavy charges during the last four years, but the business was now on a more satisfactory basis, and it may reasonably be expected that the market will be more successful in the future. "Of course," eaid his Worship, "the Council is not running the fieh market for profit, but, in order to ensure supplies of a valuable food at a reasonable price to the citizens. It is, therefore, not an ordinary business venture, the object being to cheapen the cost of fish, of which, there Sβ such an ample supply around in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf. The benefit already resulting from the establishment of a fish market will, I am sure, be fully recognised already by the citizens."
