DR. GARRETT ANDERSON DEAD
(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 18. . The death is announced of Dr. Garrett Anderson.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) Dr. Garrett Anderson was one of the first women in England to study mcdi- i cine, but the colleges of surgeons and! physicians refused to admit her .to their examinations. She therefore graduated I in France, and subsequently carried out j a campaign which ultimately forced the profession in England to admit women into its ranks. She was the first woman to fill a mayoral chair in England. Dr. Anderson was married to Mr J. G. S. Anderson, managing director of the Orient S.S. Co.. and was 81 years of age. (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
