Mr. Keith Murdoch, writing from British Headquarters in France, says that the British front is stiffening for any [ipossible ■ onslaught. The enemy is daily 'increasing his concentrations, but the British face with the utmost confidence ,the enemy's boasts that he. is preparing 'for a decisive drive. We have enormous ■mosses of artillery, and every reason for faith in the. ostieking powers of our soldiers. There may be some surprises in store for the Bochc; Also it must be remembered that the great French army, little used in 1917, stands fresh and eager for tho battle. Everybody is ready and willing to accept Hindenburg's challenge. Whenever there is a favourable wind automatically controlled balloons float over our lines, dropping pamphlets, j newspapers, and intimidating propaganda.— (United Service.) ENEMY DESTROYERS' RAID. (Received 2.55 p.m.) LONDON, December 17. In the House of Commons, Dr. T. J. Macnamara announced that two trawlers were attacked by destroyers off the Tyne, one being damaged and the other sunk. Eight of the crews were killed.— (Reuter.). j ■GERMANS SICK OF SLAUGHTER (Received 2.55 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, December 17. Herr jMaximilian Harden, writing in "Die Zukunft," says: "Time for peace has come. Mankind is sick of slaughter." (A. and N.Z. Cable.) KORNILOFF WOUNDED. (Received 2.55 p.m.) PETROGRAD, December 17. It is reported that Korniloff was wounded in a fight with the BolshexiJs troops near Potsheff. — (A. and N.Z.)
