GALE AT WELLINGTON.
SEVERAL BOATS CAPSIZED. NAVAL OFFICER DROWNED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A southerly gale yesterday swept the 'city, and raieed a heavy eea in the har,bour that caused trouble among boatine and yachting parties, in one instance th» , result being fatal. Petty Officer Frederick Sandalls, of the naval service, and Seaman Percival Carey left a ship in a email boat, and were going in the direction of Ngahauranea when the boat wae struck by a sudden squall, and capeized while trying to tack against the gale. The men hung on to the upturned boat a while, then Sandalls suggested that they should swim ashore the boat having drifted near the beacli' Sandalle struck out, and, aided by a youth named Philip Hunt, who gallantly ewam out, reached the chore, but then succumbed. Meantime Carey drifted ashore on the boat. A party of yachtsmen in the sixteenfooter Nark was caught in a squall while jibing near Karaka Bay, and went on her ibeam ends. The crew of four were ■rescued with some difficulty Iby a party returning from a fishing trip. Two other boating parties—one at Lowry Bay and another off Ward Islaei —had exciting experiences as the result of being capsized, but all concerned escaped with a wetting.
