EVACUATION Of PETROGRAD SURRENDER OF UKRAINE ITALIAN DESTROYERS REACH TRIESTE fhe German terms suggested when the armistice with -Kussia was in course of negotiation included the evacuation of Petrograd by the Government, the disarming of the Baltic fleet, and the surrender to Austria of the Ukraine. The Cossacks are reported to be fighting the Bolsheviks in the Dnieper : Valley, but contradictory accounts of the results of the encounter are given. The Japanese have occupied Vladi- | vostok, in order to prevent the Bolshevik forces seizing the , munitions sent across the Pacific by America. Italian destroyers ran the gauntlet of the defences of Ineste, penetrated the naval base, and torpedoed two warships, one of which, the Wien, was sunk, the majority of the crew being saved. The Italians returned safely to their base, despite the concentrated fire of the enemy. Raid and patrol activities continue on the British front. The Germans, who have the inferior position, are trying to dig in, but they are under constant artillery fire. The Italians repulsed a heavy attack on their front on the Asiago Plateau. The Italians fought with the utmost heroism, j and, though whole battalions were isolated, they fought to i their last cartridge, and then waited for the enemy with the J bayonet, and with their backs to the rocks, none thinkuur of I surrender. • «^^ K v*
