IN NAVY AND ARMY
QUELLED BY STERN MEASURES AUSTRIA'S HEAVY LOSSES ON THE ISONZO No new developments are reported from Flanders, where the consolidation of the new British line is still proceeding. Heavy rain fell on Wednesday night, making the fighting zone still more difficult to clear and hold. As a result of the recent rainstorms some of the country was so waterlogged that the British had perforce to draw back their advanced positions at certain points owing to the impossibility of digging in and clearing the snipers from the trees and other lurking places. A total of 2,038 prisoners was taken in Tuesday's fighting, including 400 captured by the French. Belated details have come to hand of a mutiny engineered by Socialists in the German naval base at Wilhelmshaven. The crews of five warships were concerned, and the captain of one of these was thrown overboard and drowned. One ship sought to escape to Norway, but the mutineers were surrounded and compelled to surrender. Death sentences and long terms of imprisonment followed. The Government took advantage of the revolt to strengthen its position by waving the red flag scare in the faces of the people. The Socialists have warned the Government that the Socialist party will not tamely submit to repressive measures. The end of the German East African campaign seems in sight. The last enemy guerilla band has surrendered, and the British forces are on the heels of the main body, which is retreating towards Lake Nyassa. HEAVY RAIN ON THE FLANDERS FRONT.
