CROP AXD PASTURE DAMAGED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 1 CHRISTCHURCH, this day. | The Waimakariri River started rising very rapidly yesterday afternoon, and , the overflow resulted in the biggest! inundation known for three years. About fifty motorists, enticed out by the fine day, were caught getting back to Christchurch, and most of them had to stay in Kaiapoi. Three automobiles were stuck in the water at Chaney'a, and had to be pulled out by means of a horse. About 100 acres of Coutts Island are under water. Only a little damage will be done to stock, but a good deal of crop and pasture may be spoilt. The Bealey observer reports that the Waimakariri is about six feet above normal, and that it is raining heavily from the north-west. Rakaia River is in heavy flood. Later. The flood in the Waimakariri is now receding, and but little damage has been done'except to pasturage.
