GERMANS STRENGTHENING SECOND LINE IN FLANDERS.
LONDON, September 3. A French communique states:—Lively reciprocal artillery duels occurred last night on the Aisne. Our fire completely smashed another enemy attack on the positions we captured on Friday north-west of Hurtebise Farm. The attackers were not able to reach our lines. A later communique states: —Considerable artillery activity has developed at Hurtebise Farm, north of the Aisne, iv the direction of the Maisous de Champagne, and at Hill 304, Samogneux, and Beaumont, in the Verdun sector. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We repulsed raids to the north-west of Lens and to the south-west of La Bassce. The artillery on both sides has been active to the eastward of Ypres. Our aeroplanes bombed enemy aerodromes and railway stations on Friday night. The weather hindered flying on Saturday.—](A. and N.Z. and Reuter.) The Amsterdam "Telegraaf" states that practically the whole male population of Bruges has been ordered to help to strengthen the new German lines between the Brugcs-Ostend Canal and the Yser Canal.—(A. and N.Z.)
