HOCKEY.

1 LADIES' HOCKEY, j AUCKLAND V. WAIHI. The Ladies' Representative team which visited Waihi on Saturday last met with a splendid reception r'rouj the country players, who made special efforts to ensure that the trip would lie enjoyable. Unfortunately, the weather proved unfavourable, ami rain, which commenced early in the morning, fell almost continuously through- ( out the day. The ground Buffered severely, ami rendered good hockey Impossible. lu| spite of this, however, the Auckland girls snowed a liac adaptability to the conditions, and played with good cotu'oiuatiou, which fuct accounts tor their win by three goals to nil. The attack developed mostly from the right, and a system or short passes was adopted between the halves ami forwards, which kept the Waihi backs in doubt continually concerning the Aucklauders' intentious. The visitors' left wing was not used to full advantage, iv fact, was comparatively neglected iv the second halt', but little fault can be found ou this point, because Auckland had the game weo in hand from the start. The outstanding weakness in the Waihi team was their lack of combination, the team apparently relying on individual : efforts to carry them through the game. Although several of the Waihi players are really good expoueuls of the game, the Auckland backs had little difficulty in breaking up their attacks, as Waihi seemed to fail in providing the support necessary to the attacking forwards. Some splendid individual attempts were made, but were fruitless, because uo one was there to continue the advance. Tne visitors speak in glowing terms of the cordial hospitality extended to them during the trip by the Waihi Association, and It is greatly to be regretted that had weather interfered somewhat with the complete success anticipated. In spite of the rain, however, numerous spectators, probably between 300 anil 400, witnessed the match, and displayed keen iuterest throughout, LADIES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Executive Committee o£ the Auckland Ladies' Association was held at the Training College on Monday night. The following members attended: —Mr B. H. i'urton (chairman), Misses Nordeu, Prothero, Henry, Wallis. Mabbett aud ClarkWalker. Miss P. Dawson wrote in connection with the trophy presented by her. and suggested that au alteration should be made in the conditions under which it is awarded, to the extent of providing that no player cau win the trophy outright unless she wins it three years in succession, iustead of two years, as at tirst agreed. It was decided to ask Miss Dawson to re-consider the matter. In view of the improbability of any player being eligible to compete for three successive years, as the trophy Is for competition in the junior grade-only. It was resolved to send a letter to the Waihi Association expressing thanks for the kindness shown to the Auckland team on Its recent visit. In connection with championship matches, it was decided to bring both grades to a dose as early as possible, and only those matches which have a direct influence or bearing on the respective championships ! will bo played. In the senior grade, lit. ' Eden will play Training College next Satur- ' day, and In the junior grade Henderson j will meet Training College. As soon as I the grade matches are completed, the Belmore and Berneckie Cups will be competed "for in the usual tournameut manner. The first round in the Berneckie Cup competition will be played next Saturday between Arawa and Epiphany. Correspondence from Poverty Bay. Waikato. aud Whangarei Associations regarding I representative matches <vas discussed, and Mr Parton reported that he had writteu Poverty Bay and Waikato. inviting them to ■ visit Auckland and play against the local ' team on 2Sth and 20th September respectively. Replies from both centres are ex- ■ pected shortly.
