FRENCH ADVANCE OH THE AISNE
A NORTH SEA SKIRMISH GERMAN ACTIVITY IN RIGA GULF The French, after a sharp attack, have made another bound forward on the Aisne, gaining 300 yards on a front of nearly a mile. Three enemy attempts to win back the positions failed. It is officially estimated that the Austrian losses during the recent Italian offensive totalled 100.000, while huge quantities of war stores were captured. The Austrian Emperor has made desperate appeals to the Kaiser for help, and" it is reported that one division is to be sent. French newspapers are discussing the possibility of putting Austria altogether out of the fight. Sharp rioting, partly political in origin and partly inspired by the food shortage, is reported from various parts of Hungary. Trainloads of soldiers have been used to suppress the riots. A good deal of activity has been noted in the Riga sector recently—German planes bombed Russian warships and harbour works, warships are operating in the vicinity of the coast, while trawlers are endeavouring to sweep up the minefields.
