Colonel C. E. R. Maefcesy arrived from Whangarei last evening.

Major J. L. Sleeman, Director of Military Training, arrived from Wellington yesterday, and is stavinsr at the Grand Hotel.

Mr. W. Kane has been elected chairman of the Auckland City Schortis Committee, in place of Mr. A. Rose, who has resisned.

Mr. Alexander Campbell, who was found dead at Xapier in his residence, was 84 years of ago, saw service during the Indian Mutiny, and was a veteran

of the Maori War. He belonged to the 42nd Highlanders.

Mr. R. Cornwall, -who died last week at Waverley, came to Auckland with the 65th Regiment. At the close of the war, nearly half a century ago, he went to Waverley. Deceased was in his 92nd year.

Inspector B. Sheehan. who has been appointed to the charge of the Hamilton police district, in succession to Inspector Phair. left Auckland last evening. Before his departure Inspector Pheehan wa? presented with a leather suit case and a travelling rug , by Superintendent Kiely, on behalf of trie members of the force at Auckland. Mrs. Sheehan was presented with a gold watch.

Mr. J. P. Dugdale. late of thp Government Valuation Department, died this 1-week at the age of 68 years. He was born in Huliue. Lancashire, near where the late Mr. R. J. Seddon was born. Hβ jeame to Kew Zealand in thp seventies, ultimately joining the Valuation Department, whore he held a very important position for nearly thirty years, retiring some nine years ago. Since then he has devoted part of hie time to farming, and latterly he was secretary to the Hawera Electric Lighting Company.

Captain William Meßride. cbief officer of the Burns-Philp steamer Matunga. which is now given up as lost, was formerly in the service of the Union Steamship Company, and his wife and family of four live at S3, Rose Road. Grey Lynn. Captain Meßride was born in the Isle of Arran. 39 years ago% and came to New Zealand at the age of 18. He was master of various Union Company steamer.-, and was well known in the Island trade. He vras for a period of twelve months the Rarotonga representative of Messrs. Jagger, Harvey and Miller, and-joined the Burns-PhiVp line about two years ago.
