RUSSIA COMES BACK.

TEN THOUSAND PRISONERS GERMANY'S HUGE WAR LOSSES TWO MILLION KILLED, THREE MILLION DISABLED The Russian offensive, which was yesterday reported to have begun, has apparently prospered, and already a stronglydefended point in the enemy's line in Eastern Galicia has been taken, over ten thousand prisoners falling into the hands of the Russians. The movement is most opportune, and should have _ decidedly stimulating effect on the whole spirit of Russia. The Germans admit that the Russians are again attacking, under the impulse of the Allies, but claim that the attacks have failed. British patrols have hunted out a U-boat base on the Ajnerican coast, killing the Huns in charge and confiscating the supplies. American experts are of the opinion that the whole U-boat campaign is a failure, in that the million tons a month that the enemy expected to sink has not been approximated by the results. They estimate that the total diminution of tonnage as the result of a year's piracy was a million tons. The Germans organised a fierce attack on the French positions north of the Chemin dcs Dames, and succeeded in taking the front-line trenches, but at enormous cost. At other points their attempts to break the French line failed. Figures given under the seal of secrecy in the Reichstag place the German killed or died of wounds and sickness at 2,000,000, while 3,000,000 are permanently disabled, with the figures for the heavy fighting on the Hindenburg line still to come.
