WANTON SAVAGERY OF THE PIRATES.
SUNKEN LiNER-S BOATS HEAVILY SHRAPNELLED. ißcccived U. 35 a-m.) LONDON, June 23. The Eldpr Dempster liner Addah was submarined without warning on tie 15th inst- After the vessel had been hit the submarine, which had not previously been seen, emerged and tired while the boats were being lowered. Hiells bit the Addah seven times. The submarine came alongside the chief officer's boat before the ship sank and put one of its officers and four men aboard and proceeded to board the Addah. After a couple of minutes the men rr-turncd to the submarine and told the chief officer's boat to clear out. Meanwhile the master's boat, which was already badly smashed by a submarine shell, was thirty to forty yards distant. The submarine reopened fire ivith shrapnel on the master's boat, killing eight and tearing the boat's stern right off. The submarine continued to shrapnel the swimming men after the boat sank. After the submarine commander thought he had finished .everybody in the master's boat lie fired eight shrapnel shells at the chief officer's boat. Inn, fortunately nobody was killed, though several were slightly wounded and ".he boat was badly damaged. The commander waved the chief officer to go and pick up the master and other swimmers, and then made off. A French patrol steamer picked up these victims of barbarism. — (Reutcr.)
Tne Elder Dempster and 1 0., Ltd.. owned the Addah. which was a steel screw steamer of 3.149 tons gross. She was built in 1905 by Palmer and Co., Ltd.. of Newcastle. The Elder Dempster line controls over 100 steamers, ranging in sjze from one hundred to eleven thousand tons.
