« The mid-winter -vacations for the State schools will commence neAt week. The First Auckland Military Service Board leaves for Whangarei this evenftig. A second honours board has been presented to the Parnell school by Mr. J. J. SSeatty. The Portuguese expeditionary force in France is expected to take over a sector of front shortly. Sixty prominent Greeks, including an ex-Premier, are to be deported, and 103 others are to be interned. The Italians have stormed many more formidable positions in the Xrentino, taking nearly I,OUO prisoners. Many Belgians are reported to have crossing into Holland ir. the belief that a German evacuation is imminent. King C'onstantine lias been hooted, stoned, and a.bu.sed by crowds in Switzerland, and had to receive police protection. The Xational Dairy Association at Palmerston North has decided to request the Government to restrict the export of white pine. A commission, representing the Greek Governments at Athens and Solonika, is to consider political unification and the granting of amnesties. Sir J. X. Merriman's motion condemning republican propaganda has been carried by the South African House of Assembly by 72 votes to 21. The Austrians are receiving considerable reinforcements on the Italian front, owing to the inactivity of Russia, which is causing many complaints in Italy. An early closing movement for chemists has been started in Wellington. A special' central pharmacy is to be established for late and urgent prescriptions. At the congress of delegates from Auckland Trades Unions last evening, it was resolved to work in the direction of link ing up the Labour forces nationally. Mr. Balfour says that Britain will soon sec concerted application of the immeasurable resources of both Great Britain and America to tbe common purpose of wir.ning the war. Demonstrations have been made in Switzerland against M. Hoffmann, the ex-Minister who forwaTded German peace proposals to Rusia, and Prince yon But-low, a former German Chancellor. A plea for the more rapid progress of construction works on the East Coast Railway was made by a deputation from the Tauranga district to members of Parliament at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon.
