AN AUCKLANDER HONOURED.
METJT. H. SPEIGHT, M.C. (Received 0.15 a.m.) LONDON, June 18. Lieutenant Harold Speight, of the New Zealand Field Artillery, has been awarded the Military Cross.—(A. and NX Cable.)
Lieutenant Harold Speight is the eldest son of the late Mr Wm. C. Speight, for many years on the commercial staff oi the "Auckland Star." He joined the Bank of New Zealand in Auckland, and after service in the Hamilton and Raetihi branches, was transferred to the head office in Wellington. He enlisted with the Fourth Reinforcements, joining the artillery as a gunner. Though offered the opportunity of joining a later reinforcement as an N.C-0., he preferred to take his chance of promotion in the fieldHe won his stripes on Gallipoli, and in. May of last year, after the New Zealand i division's transfer to France, he was | awarded a commission. Early last month lie was wounded in the face and left eye, and after hospital treatment in France was sent to the New Zealand hospital at Walton-on-Thames.
