OBITUARY.
LIEUT.-COLOXEL T. HOPE LEWIS. The death occurred suddenly this morning of Lieutenant-Colonel T. Hope Lewis, of the N.Z.M.C. Dr. Lewis had been staying at the Northern Club, and was to have inspected nn overseas boat this morning. Before retiring last night he left instructions that he was to bo called at 7 a.m. When the steward came to call him he received no reply in respouse to bin knock, and, on opening the door, found the doctor dead in bed. Medical aid was at once called in. but all tliat could be done was to pronounce life extinct from heart failure. Dr. Lewis was born in Wales in the year 1800, was educated at Rugby School, and studied at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He entered the Navy in IS7O, but left the service in 1352 and came to NewZealand in one of Her Majesty's warships.
Shortly after his arrival here he was appointed by the New Zealand Government as resident medical officer at the Rotorua Sanatorium. Dr. Lewis also held the appointment of Admiralty surgeon and agent for the Imperial Government, and was health officer for the Port of Auckland, under the New Zealand Government, for fifteen years. He was an honorary surgeon at the Auckland Hospital, and chief medical referee for the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society. A few years ago he made a visit to the Old Country, and on his return again commenced to practice in Auckland. On the outbreak of war he offered his services to the Government, and was appointed inspector of military hospitals in New Zealand with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Following on his appointment he. made Wellington his headquarters, hut in pursuance of his duties was a frequent visitor to Auckland.
Dr. Lewis took a prominent interest in a number of social and other institutions. He was president of the Victoria League and a prominent member of the Acclimatisation Society, and also of the Auckland Savage Club, of which he was at one time president. He married Miss Fenlon, daughter of Judge Fenton of the Native Land Court, and is survived by his wife, a son on active service, and a daughter. Mrs. Guy Williams, of Te Parae, Masterton Wairarapa.
