VALEDICTORY.

Mr. Thomas ITanna, until latelr a meniber nf the Takapuna Bo rough Council, was entertained nt a large gathering of Takapuna residents in the Foresters' Hull hist night, on Ihe eve of his departure for Putaruru, where he intends to settle. Mr. \V. Blomfield. Mayor of tlie borough, who presided, presented Mr. ITanna with a gold watch, subscribed for by the residents generally. Mr. Hanna was also presented with a case of pipes by Ihe members of the Takapuna Bowling flub. During the past few days Mr. Hanna has also received a number of other presentations, including a silver salver from the congregation of St. George's Presbyterian Church, a travelling bag from the Northern Suburban Agricultural and Horticultural Association, and a silver tea service from a number of friends.

The engineer 'to the Waitemata County Council has observed the very noticeable increase in the maintenance cost of roads in places where trees overshadow, especially on the north and cast sides. He submitted a detailed schedule of properties where trees overhang the roads controlled by the Council, and that body has decided to order these owners to trim the trees back to the road boundary, and to reduce their height to 20ft.
