PUBLIC "WORKS DEPARTMENT. i CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION. The hearing was continued at the ■Supreme Court this morning, 'before his Honor Mr. Justice Cooper and Messrs. H. H. Ostler and G. Elliot, assessors respectively for the Crown and City Council, of the case in which the Department of Public Works is claiming, under the Public Works Act, 1908, the stun of £16,945 .from the Auckland City Council in respect of land taken for the eastern outlet scheme, and the cost of acquiring new accommodation and removal to a new s-ito. Hon. J. A. Tole, K.C., appeared for the Department, and Mr. J. R. Reed, j K.C., and with him Mr. J. Stanton, for the Oity Council. j Leave to amend an item of £200 in j the statement of claim to £369 10/10, I for the removal and re-erection of furniture, machinery and malterial. was applied for yesterday, by Mr. Tole. and i granted. This brings the total of the claim to £17,114 ID/10. Evidence was given for the City Council this morning by Joseph Thornce, land and estate agent; Henry B. Burnett, secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board, a-ml VVaJter E. Bush, city engineer. Counsel agreed to waive addresses, and thic case was adjourned till Monday, his Honor stating that, if possible, the award would be delivered on Monday morning, or if not, in the course of a few days.
