A plea-ant gathering took place at the 1 übhe Hall, liowick. to bid farewell to Air. H. Itaynall prior to hi, leavins for Irentham camp. Mr. \\". Speechley presided, and musical items were given Uur-. ing the evening. Captain C. X. Newman, who is mentioned in to-day•* cables as having been awarded the Croix dc (Juerre, or trench Uur t'ror*. U a hoii of Mr. .1. \\ . Newman. of Mt. Eden, and was former!.- a lieutenant in tlie A Buttery of Artillery. He enlißted with the ".Main Body icit the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and served throughout the Gallipoli campaign, beins mentioned in dispatches and promoted to captain. He lias also served with tbe New Zealand artillery ever since their arrival in France, whore he was again mentioned in dispatches, this time by General Sir Charles Monro. The rapid growth ami the mnnjactivities of Fcatherston Camp are the i subject of a finely-illustrated book issued this month. The book, the text of which is composed mainly of descriptive articles contributed originally to the "Dominion" by Mr. Will Lawson, j consists of nearly 200 pages, and deals | with every branch of the camp's work. The recruits' progress, from the time of | his arrival, half-fledged, from Trcntham. until he is deemed fit for the long journey to the battle-front, is fully I described. The administration of Fcatherston, its daily routine, the medical. : record, sanitary, supply, police, and other services have also sections to themselves, and altogether the book gives a better idea of the New Zealand soldier's earlier career than any compilation that has yet been attempted. Tbe illustrations, which number over 200, are very finely reproduced, end several of them arc good examples of colour work. Quaint designs appropriate to the various subjects form an effective decoration to the pages, and the khaki cover bears an effective design reproduced by the offset lithographic process. The book has been printed by the P.rett Printing and Publishing Co., which is also responsible for the half-tone blocks and the designing of the decorations.
