CANADA'S BIG SHARE.
FILLING THE GAPS.
THOUSANDS OF MEN HEADY.
(Special to "Star.' , ) SAN FRANCISCO, March 13. Canada is making active preparations to take a prominent part in the groat Allied offensive on the Western front this spring. Thousands of troops have arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, for Kngland. The housing and feeding of these troops have proved quite a problem, but it is being met successfully, and has brought increased business prosperity to the province. Major-General Lessard (InspectorGeneral for Kastern Canada) has been in St. John, New Brunswick, supervising the work of mobilisation. He recently was quoted as saving that 100,000 additional men would be needed within the next few months to off-act possible casualties in the spring offensive, and to keep the Canadian divisions at their full strength. The presence of large numbers of troops lias stimulated recruiting. Since the Provincial election the work of enlistment has been taken up with increased vigour, and a close competition has developed among the different units. Churches have opened their doors to recruiting parties, and appeals from the pulpit and altar for Canadians "to do their bit" is meeting with a ready response. Officers and men alike express confidence that the war is approaching its final stage, and all are eager for eervice at the Front. Increased activity on the part of German submarines in the Atlantic has caused little concern. Officials point out that not one life was lost in the transportation overseas of more than 300,000 Canadian soldiers, and they confidently expect this record will be kept up. The transports are adequately armed and convoyed. Men's wear! We have received big shipments of new season's goods in all departments. Make an early visit tc secure your favourite choice.
