OmXEMTJRI JOCKEY CLUB. THE PATRIOTIC MEETING. A RECOED GATHERING. JOCKEYS SUSPENDED. The Ohineniuri Jockey Club's Patriotic Sleeting was concluded at Taeroa yesterday in fine ■weather, anil -with a very large attendance. The gathering was easily the best yet held by the club, and the secretary, Mr 11.. Poland, and the committee nave every reason to congratulate themselves on the success of their efforts. The stewards were together on a couple of occasions during the afternoon, and as a result the jockeys Preston and C. Brown were each suspended for three months, particulars of which are given below. THE TOTALISATORS. Speculation was very brisk, the staff of Messrs Blomfleld and Co. handling the sum of £i 0.075 10/. which makes a total for the meeting of £3.0,130 10/. as against £20.138 10/, an increase of £12,992. [Particulars are: — THE FAVOURITE WINS. Racing commenced with the Hikutaia Handicap, -which attracted a field oC fifteen. Okere being the only withdrawal, while Carlist, which was omitted from thu card, took his place at the post. Monodou wound up favourite, but a lot of money came for Uncle Ned and St. Carl, while Bezmar and Sir Ralph got most support of the others. Uncle Ned was allowed to delay the start for some time before he was sent to the outside, and when the barrier lifted Carlist was quickest to begin, but Sir Ralph soon headed him off and led down the back, followed by Bezmar, Monodon, Welshman and St. Carl. Crossing the top Uncle Ned ran up to Sir Kalph, and the pair raced together to the straight, with Monodon, St. Carl, Bezmar and .Sleepy the distance Sir Kalph and Uncle Ned" were disputing the issue, when Monodon came through, and, quickly settling the leaders, won by a length. Bezmar finished fast and just beat Uncle Ned and Sir Ralph, heads separating the trio, and came S;eepy Jack, Carlist, Gluetanus, St. Carl and Oakland, the last pair being 'Welshman and Kyra. AN EASY WIN. Blue and Black failed to come out for the Waitekauri Handicap, the sprint event, and punters sent Ring Lupin out a redhot odds-on favourite, with Lord Ainsllu a good second choice, the rest of the field being at long prices. The race proved the good thing the betting indicated, for the favourite, getting the best of the start, made a one-horse race of it, winning easily by four lengths from Declare, which was a couple of lengths in front of Excavator. GLENDALOUGH STILL WINNING. The withdrawal of Tiniroto, Wake Up and Eros "left a field of seven to contest the Handicap Hurdles. Glendalough, which claimed the 51b allowance, which reduced Uer weight to 10.0, was sent out a warm proposition, but money coming for Cokely, Yankee Doodle and Kaiwhakabaere made the pool a good one. The favourite was early in the lead, and, though Jumping badly, showed the Tray past the stand, followed by Yankee Doodle, Cokely. Akuhata, Ditto, Kal-whaiahaere and Sylvan Knight, the last-named pair being pulled up a furlong further on. Glendalough was still making the pace going along the back, where Cokely's saddle came off and Ditfc. ran up second. With the last fence down. Ditto put in a strong run up the straight, and the favourite had to be hard ridden to win by a head. Cokely finished third, but could not get. the weight under the circumstances mentioned above, and Yankee Doodle got the position. After the race Mr A. Gordon, the stipendiary steward preseut. had Preston, the rider' of Glendalougb. before the stewards for alleged interference, and after Preston had made a statement he was suspended for , three months for the, interference and

also for alleged unsatisfactory evidence. T. Scott, the rider of Yankee Doodle, was also severely cautioned, it being alleged during the hearing that he had approached the other riders in the race as to their chances in the' race. THE BIG RACE. Toki was the only scratching from the out as the correct pea, ibut .Minister tarried a Jot of money, and Fionnuala, Waiuta, «nd Kauri King Ivad plenty of friends. -There was a lot of trouble at the post, but the barrier lifted to ,-iv eveu dispatch, Oleuspire, Fioiumala. ami Aehilledes being Urst to break the line, the trio racing- in company out of the .straight, with Waiuta. Kauri King, and Signo heading the others. Opening up the back stretch Fionnnala -was out by herself. Kauri King running up second, -with AchUledes, Glensplre, W-aiuta, Signo, Minister, Phosphorus, and Royal β-ufus racing in that order, i'lonnnala was still making the pace as they crossed the top. with Kauri King, Clcnspirc. and Achilledes following, and tlie rest of the field closing up. Flonnuala maintained her advantage into the straight, and though Glensplre. Kauri King, and Achilledes all challenged in the run to the judge, they ■bad no -chance of reaching the daughter ot Spalpeen, which won comfortably by Hirer lengths. Gleuspire ms a heart in front of Kauri King, with vAchilledes close up, fourth; and then <amc Phosphorus, Minister. Waiuta, and Rovnl 'Rufiis, with Signo last. LADI" r-AULA AGAIN. Monoclon. Wake Up, and Tupato failed to come out £ov the Miners' Hack 'Handicap, which punters summed up as n good thing for Lady -Paula in a good betting race, half-hearted support being accorded liez-in-ar. Campaign, tSt. Carl, and All Talk. -The betting indicated the result for the fuvourlte, getting to the front early, 'never gave her supporters any jiuxletv, winuiug Very easily from St. Carl, whivh just bent ■Campaign for second honours. 'Surrey .Park was fourth, and then on mc Bramar, Paul Moore, and All Talk, with Okere last. TiHE FAVOURITE BEATEN. Toki and Electrakoff were not saddled up for the Waikino Welter Handicap, leaving a field <>f ten. Corregidor was made a warm favourite, with Silver Lupin and British Arch next in request, this trio carrying the bulk of the investments. When ■they were let go A-ehilledes and Soultnne moved first, the former going out to make the running, followed by Porphory aud -n-itu the others buncbetl f. rOS ? in X th <" top Aclillledes had a shade !i- e ,i c { Z r of •Corresidor. with King of the \ alley third. In the run home Achilledes drew out. eventually winning by a length irom <orregidor. with Porphorr. which was imlurky two lengths away, third. King < "t the Waller was fourth, and then came Sot m"£- ' SllTer L "P in - antl ' ?le epv Jack, with Carblness last. ANOTHER MIX Uγ. The Autumn Steeplechiu-e brought out the eight acceptors. Bonnie Jean being moet in favour, with plenty of money for lip and Captain Loch, and a little for Troublesome Disaster commenced early, aud soon after the start, in which Gluterino was left several lengths, the second fence of the double saw Lady Lobelia and Jack the Lad run 00. while Pip stopped aud lost his rider, bringing Captain Loch to "grief. Glutenno then went on, leading past the stand, followed by Knhvhakahaerc, Bonnie Jean aud .Troublesome 3n that order: while Captain Lwh. Lady Lobelia, and Pin which were got going again, were half a mile away. The positions as above were maintained until the lust half mile was entered «n, when Bonnie Jean and Troublesome moved up. Gluterlno was. however going easy in front, and the race looked ali over, when a faulty jump at the second to last fence brought him to grief, and Bonuie Jean and Troublesome were left to fight it out. the former staying the longer, and getting the decision by four lengths. Kalwhakahaere was a furlong away, third Captain Loch being the only other tj finish. THE GATHERING CONCLUDED. Brown Loch was not saddled up for the Walbl Handicap. Lightning being installed favourite, but .link Tie got a lot of support, and there was plenty of money for Last Call, rink Tic led tor about a couple of furlongs, when Last Call took charge and was never afterwards headed, winning l>v a couple of lengths from I , ink Tie, which, just beat the outsider Lady Mabel for second honours. After the. race an inquiry was held into certain happenings, as a result of which C. Browne, the rider of Lightning, was suspended for throe months. pending further investigation. Time, 1.17, A JOCKEY'S APPEAL. DISMISSED BY CONFERENCE. ! ■ CIIRISTCHUROII, Monday. An appeal to the Racing Conference by Hector Gray against the decision of the Auckland District Committee in refusing hits application for a jockey's license has ■been heard. The following is the decision of the judges:—The first question to be decided is whether the judges have power •to entertain it. We consider that under rule 1 of part xxxiv. we have such power, but that its exercise siuce the Conference rejected the proposal to transfer the licensing of joekeyts from district committees to a committee of the Conference is in effect limited to very exceptional circumstances, which do not exist in'the pre- \ sent ease. We do not, however, wish, to base our rejection of this appeal solely on the ground above stated. It appears that appellant was disqualified in New Zealand for -'pulling" a horse, that lie thereafter disregarded the restrictions involved by such disqualification, that the stipeudlary stewards recommended that he be not again licensed in New Zealand, and that subsei quently he -was again disqualified in AueI tralla for a similar offence. The serious ! views which authorised licensing bodies lave taken of these recorded offences is : sliown by the replies sent by them to the questions of the Auckland Dietrict Committee. The committee of Taranaki dis- ; trict, in which appellant had resided, declined to recommend the issue of a license. The Australian Jockey Club acswered , that it wonld have refused a license if Gray's application had not been ■withdrawn. We feel bound to accept these facts as evidence of the gravity with =which such responsible officials regarded appellant's conduct, and we therefore—if we held, ourselves entirely free to reverse the decision of a district committee—should not consider It right or advlsaWe to do so in the case before us.—(Signed) George Clifford, .1. "W. ■ Abbott, O. >S. 'Watklns. judges.
