STIFF FIGHTING BEFORE CAPTURE OF BAPAUME
ADVANCE ON A SIXTEEN-MILE FRONT. FOURTEEN VILLAGES I'AiL INTO BRITISH HANDS. (High Commissioner's Cable.) LONDON, March 18. The British have captured Bapaume. The capture of Bapaume followed stiff fighting. The enemy pillaged the town; private and public buildings -were destroyed, and everything of value was carried off or burnt. The advance on both sides of the Somme covers a front of 16 miles, and includes the occupation of the following villages:— Fresnes, Horgny. Tillers. Carbonnel, Barleux, Eterpigny, Maisonette, Iβ TJransloy, Biefvilliers, Bilracourt, Achict, Ablainzcville, Bucquoy, and le3 Essarts. The British now hold the whole of St. Pierre Vaast Wood, cast of Combles, and the onemy ? s trenches for I,oooyds to the south and 2,oooyds to the north. An attack north-east of Gommecourt was beaten off.
