AMERICAN SAYS THAT 25 WERE CAPTURED IN 15 DAYS. •teHIFICANT CAUTION OF THE GERMAN NEWSPAPERS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, March 4. Mr. Frank Simonds, editor and war correspondent of the "New York "flnaie," has returned from London. Quoting what he says are Admiralty •gores, he asserts that between February 1 and 15 the British captured 25 •nbmarin'es. Two surrendered in one day, the crews having kilied the officers. As far as can be ascertained, the losses through submarines during February were 121 British ships, of 256,632 tons; 10 allied ships, of 15,422 Was; and 50 neutral ships, of 81,143 tons; total 181 ships of 353,197 tons. The *mvals at, and departures from, United Kingdom ports to February 25 "Umbered 16,490. AMSTERDAM, March 4. Herr Zimmermann, German Secretary for Foreign Affairs, told an internewer -that the number of submarines had been quantupled. He expected "Aaiarines would finish the war by the autumn. German newspapers are significantly cautious regarding the submarine -*~paign. The Cologne newspaper "Yolks Zeitung" says that a complete **°ppage of shipping is not to be expected, but a diminution of imports to ™ c Allies will procure peace on Germany's terms. Not starvation, but the •*Hie- realisation that starvation is approaching, will bring a decision. The ■ newspaper says Germany may he forced to send out her fleet. The Vienna newspaper "Fremdenblatt" says that the new German submarines have a great radius of action, and a powerful armament. Six*jlindered 1,000-horse power oil engines are used under the sea instead of tottcries, and the submarines can remain below indefinitely. All are fitted M minelayers.
