BRITAIN ARMING EVERY MERCHANTMAN.

THE SUBMARINE DREAD OF ARMED LINE3S. GRIM ALTERNATIVE TO COMBATING MENACE. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 8. Mr. J. Hodge (Minister of Labour), in the course of a speech in London, said that it would not be long before every merchantman was properly armed. He recalled a recent statement that out of seventy-eight adequately armed vessels only six were submarined, and remarked: ••We desire to maintain that production, because Germany dreads nothing more than armed liners and tramps. But it all means shells, and still more sheila. Hence the Government's appeal to women." Mr. Hodge appealed to .women volunteers, adding: "Unless we combat the submarine menace we shall be threatened with a food shortage."
