CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Council yesterday evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. H. Gunson) and Messrs A. J. Entrican, G. Knight, H. N. Bagnali, R. T. Michaels, E. J. Carr, J. A. Warnock, G. Balldon. J. Burton, W. J. Holdsworth, S. M. Moore-Jones, H. D. Heather, G. W. Murray. F. w. Brinsden, J. Dempsey, T. McElwaln, J. Trevlthlck, T. J. Nerheny, and Miss E. Melville. EXPERIMENTAL PAVING. An applicatlen "by E. P. Gill to lay a sample patch of read-surface material was agreed to, provided applicant undertook tc put down a patch ten feet in length and 23 feet in width on Pitt Street for experimental purposes. TRAM DESTINATION SIGNS. Arising out of correspondence between the Tramway Company and the City Cauncil regarding the possibility of confusion arising from the use of "City" and "Town Hall" destination signs to distinguish between cars running to the city via Upper Queen "Street or by other routes, the City Solicitor had the matter referred to him. He advised the Council that as a disagreement between the Company and the Council would probably Involve litigation with doubtful result, it would not be wise to contest the immediate issue, cut adding that it might be competent for the Council to make a new by-law expressly requiring destination signs to be placed on the sides of cars, "but such by-laws would not apply to tramcars already in commission. The Council decided to have a bylaw passed requiring side destination signs on new cars. Mr R. T. Michaels stated that a great difficulty to passengers, particularly strangers, was to find out which cars were going out of town via the Town Hall. Mr Entrican suggested that the difficulty might be met by notice boards at the tram stops enumerating the cars that went past the Town Hall. It was decided to put the latter matter before the Tramway Company. STREET NAMES. The Finance and Legal Committee recommended that the following street names in Eden Terrace be altered to avoid clashing with names of streets elsewhere In the City Area: —Rose Street to Korari Street, Summer Street to Raumnte Street, Violet Street to Ruru Street, Brown Street te Ngahuru Street, Eden Street to Tawa Street, and sCharlotte Street (off Cook Street) to Bronte Street. A motion that the matter be referred back to committee was lest, Mr R. T. Michaels and others protesting that the Maori names were too confusing to strangers. A request *by residents that the name of Alfred Street, "Remuera, be changed to Somme Avenue, Instead of to Hastings •Street, was declined. A LARGE CLAIM. A claim by R. Nudds, of £480, as general damages for accidental injuries stated to have been sustained by falling over tar barrels In Princes Street was referred to
