MILITARY PENSIONS.
« 5,620 GRANTED TO DATE; ANNUAL AMOUNT ABOUT £244,000. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Last week the War Pensions Board dealt with 125 new claims, 35 renewals, and several special cases. Of these 86 were from soldiers and 39 from depend-' ents. Six soldiers were granted permanent pensions, 75 temporary pensions, four -were declined, and one adjourned. One pension cancelled was that of a man sentenced to three months'" imprisonment.^ Up to date 5,620 pensions have been granted of an. annual value of £284,786. Deaths and ether causee reduce the amount to approximately £244,000. Mr. Francis Mackenzie, who died at Helensville on Sunday, arrived in Auckland his parents in 1863. For Home time he was engaged on a New Zealand paper, but later went to the Melbourne diggings. Afterwards he was in the Government printing office at Sydney, and then returned to Auckland as overseer of the "Southern Croee" newspaper. In 1879 he started the "Northern Luminary" at Kawakawa, and upon retiring went to live at Helensville.
