DEEDS OF GALLANTRY.
DECORATIONS AWARDED. The "London Gazette" supplies the following particulars of the deeds of gallantry for which the 12 New Zealand officers named have been awarded the Military Cross, as already cabled:— Captain D. E. Bremner, infantrj, Drury, led his company with great courage and skill, although wounded, and he reorganised and consolidated the position. He set a splendid example to his
Second-Lieutenant S. J. E. Closey, Riflo Brigade, Otorohanga, assumed command of and led his company with great courage and initiative, capturing and consolidating the position. He set a splendid example to his men. Second-Lieutenant A. C- Cooper, infantry, Waihi, led his platoon with great courage and initiative. Later, although wounded, he remained at his post. Previously he captured an enemy machine srun himself. Second-Lieutenant H. G. de F. Garland, .nfantry, Hamilton, kept the brigade continuously supplied with munitions and stores under very heavy fire. He set a splendid example to his men throughout. Second-LientenajDt W. -Ay Gray,-- Rifle Brigade, Mount Eden, assumed command of his company, and led it with great courage and determination, capturing the position and reorganising his line. He set a splendid example to his men. Captain H. S. Harley, infantry, Nelson, handled his men with great courage and skill under very trying circumstances. Later, during an enemy attack, he himself bombed the enemy from the open. Second-Lieutenant W. G. Harrison, Rifle Brigade, Christchurch, with 20 men established a strong post near the enemy trenches under very heavy fire, thereby assisting greatly in maintaining the line at a critical time.
The Rev. Clement Houchen, New Zealand Chaplains' Department, Te Kuitl, tended and dressed the wounded under very heavy fire, with great courage and determination. He set a splendid example throughout the operations. Captain R. G. S. Orbell, Medical Corps, tended the wounded under heavy fire with great courage and determination. On one occasion he carried two wounded men on bis horse to a place of safety. Second-Lieutenant S. T. Seddon, infantry, Mount Eden, organised and led bombing parties with great courage and determination, thereby greatly assisting in holding the trench against determined enemy attacks. He set a splendid example throughout. Second-Lieutenant F. C. R. Upton, infantry, Ashburton, led his platoon with great courage and initiative, and organised a bombing party to repel an enemy attack. Later he carried out a most valuable reconnaissance.
THE MILITARY MEDAL-. ADDITIONAL BARS AWARDED. Three New Zealanders who were previously awarded the Military Medal have now received the addition of a bar, viz.: Corp. W. B. Cooke. Medical Corps. Private H. Rawhiti, Pioneer Battalion. Sergt. F. Kennedy, Field Artillery. The Military Medal for bravery in the field "has been awarded to the following New Zealand non-commissioned officers and men: —
