FATAL ACCIDENT.

AUCKLAND RIDER KILLED.

HORSE ALSO DESTROYED.

During the running of the Farewell Handicap at the Northern Wairoa Racing Club's Meeting on Saturday Gold Lac fell, his rider, the apprentice J. C. L. Chaafe. being thrown heavily. The horse was killed, and his rider was picked up in an unconscious condition. He was at once attended to by Dr. Crum-p, but was beyond medical aid, dying in a few minutes.

The deceased lad was a son of the wellknown Ellerslie trainer Mr. J. Chaafe, jun., to whom he was apprenticed, and was only in his sixteenth year. He has had a lot of experience in race riding, having held a license for some two or three years, and has ridden a number ofwinners. He was successful on Alf. Delaval at the recent Ellerslie meeting, and oh Saturday had ridden Gold Lac to victory earlier in the afternoon. A promising- young rider, the news of his untimely end cast quite a gloom over the training quarters at Ellerslie, considerable sympathy being extended to hie bereaved parents.

The body of deceased reached Auckland this morning, the funeral, which was largely attended, taking place this afternoon.
