CONFERENCE ON THE GENERAL SITUATION

ROME, January 7. M. Briand, Mr. Lloyd George, and Lord Milner, with their official advisers, have arrived in Rome to exchange views with the Italian Government on the general situation. They received an immense reception. The newspapers emphasise the importance of the meeting, and declare that the conference signifies that the Allies are prosecuting decisive events. AMSTERDAM. January 7. The Eerlin newspaper "Tageblatt" says:—"The Allied War Council in Rome has probably assembled to obtain Italian co-operation in the Balkans, otherwise General Sarrail's army is irreparably lost. The conference indicates the critical situation of the Allies in the Balkans."
CLOSEST UNION FOR DECISIVE VICTORY.
(Australian and Xew Z*ul.iiid Cable Association and neuter.) (Received 0.5 a.m.) ROME, January 7. A dinner was held at the French Embassy in honour of the Allies' representatives. The toasts pledged the Allies to the closest union for a decisive \ ictorv.
