CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
The response to the appeal for Christmas gift* for the troops,, made by the Mayoress, Mrs. J. H. Gunson, and the Auckland Women's Patriotic League, has been most gratifying, showing that the spirit of patriotism and of real desire to be of some help to our soldiers is thoroughly alive in our midst. Many surprises have been noted, one of them being that so generous a response has come from places, where in the ordinary course, owing to the eparsity of the population, one would not expect so much. There is scarcely a town or settlement in the whole of the Auckland military area which has not responded to some extent. The activity of the affiliated branches has been very great. These places are marked on the list with an asterisk. The gifts for the Main Body are now well on their way to their destination. The postal authorities have in their care those intended for the prisoners of war in Germany and Turkey, and the billies! for Egypt have also left our shores.) Those for Samoa and Mesopotamia are almost completed, and there still remains a sufficient number of Christmas': boxes to provide Aunkland'i quota for t-he men who will paes their Christmas on the transports. • That this result should have been accomplished by the direct giving of those interested, ia, of course, one of the most gratifying features of the scheme. The following is the list of districts and the number of gifts provided. For the great majority of these the goods were purchased and the parcels packed at the Town Hall, but several of tbo branch leagues elected to pack their own:-- •,....-: City and Suburbs (Otabnbu heads the list of suburbs, with 215, Dovonport being si-coud, with 170).—•Arondale 4ii, Bayswfiter 8, •Birkenhead 51), City 542, »Bevonport 170, Edendale 13, Ellerslio 11, Epsom 144, Grey Lyuu 17, 'Henderson' 1, «Mt Albert 140. .Mt.
