THE GOAL.

RED CROSS SECURES £4,000. FURTHER CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED. CONVERSAZIONE THIS EVENING. That the branch of the Red Cross Society in Auckland has the complete sympathy of the public has been demonstrated in a rather remarkable manner. Conjointly with the opening of the new depot in Queen Street yesterday, and as part of the universal campaign, the local committee asked the public to contribute £4.000 towards the work. By last night three-fourths of the amount had been subscribed, and at the time of going to press the committee had the total aimed at almost in hand. The effort must not stop here, for the society needs every penny that is likely to be contributed towards its work during the whole term of the war. There is a sentiment behind the Red Cross movement that stands for more than gifts in kind or cash. Encouraged by the success of yesterday's function, and in order to dispose of a laTge quantity of gift goods, the committee has decided to hold a conversazione from 5 to S p.m. to-day, with a musical programme throughout, and an auction at 7 p.m. The hon. secretary (Mr. H. D. Robertson) is again supervising the arrangements. The Minister of Munitions (the Hon. A. M. Myers) had intended being present yesterday, but had to send an apology. A most successful benefit entertainment was given at the Grafton Theatre last night, and, following on an appeal by Mr. C. H. Poole, M.P., a collection during the interval realised £10 18/6. To this amount the net proceeds will be added. LIST Or DONATIONS.""" TOTAL TO DATE, £1,607 19/10. Further donations have been received as follows: — £ 6. d. J. A.
