BRITISH BEAT OFF ENEMY COUNTER-ATTACKS
EAUCOURT L'ABBAYE ENTIRELY IN OUR HANDS. (Bigh Commissioners Cable.) - , ' (Received 8.20 a.m:) LONDON, October 2. A British official report states:—'"We beat off an enemy counter-attack last night southwards of the Ancre, and advanced our position east of Eaucourt I'Abbaye, establishing our front there and clearing the Irafldings of the enemy. "We also established our line westward to a point I,2ooyds north of Courcelette, in the direction of Hessian trench. An enemy counter-attack forced us to relinquish a portion, of the Regina trench. We gained ground northwards, where stubborn fighting continued for twenty-four hours." A French official reports says.—"A German trench was captured eastwards of Bouchavesnes." "We successfully raided the enemy's trenches northward of Neuville St. vaast and eastward of Laventie." *
